We believe that outdoor climbing should be accessible to everyone and we’re committed to creating welcoming, supportive experiences for people of all abilities. Our Adaptive Climbing Programs are designed to meet individuals where they are, honoring each person’s unique strengths and needs.

Whether you’re brand new to climbing or an experienced athlete looking for a challenge, we offer personalized instruction and community-based opportunities tailored for climbers with physical, sensory, cognitive, and developmental disabilities.

Adaptive Program Options:

Custom Adaptive Climbing Sessions

One-on-one instruction with highly trained guides who collaborate with you to create a fun, safe, and empowering climbing experience. Rates are standard to a Private Guided day for two people to include a parent, guardian or caregiver as needed.

Adaptive Community Climb Days

Low-cost or subsidized group events designed to foster connection and accessibility within the adaptive community.

Custom Adaptive Program Details:

  • Four hours of outdoor rock climbing instruction at Mission Trails Regional Park or Dixon Lake

  • All climbing equipment needed to participate in the experience for the client and their guardian

  • Transportation and food are not provided by SDCS

  • Ages 6+

Program Goals:

  1. Provide supportive instruction tailored to individual needs

  2. Build confidence, coordination, and social-emotional skills

  3. Promote connection with self, others, and the outdoors

  4. Inspire awe through meaningful adventure

Adaptive Program Locations:

Adaptive Programs can take place at any location that fits the participant’s needs. The most accessible outdoor climbing venue in San Diego is Dixon Lake, though it remains inaccessible to certain mobility considerations.

San Diego Regional Center Vendor:

San Diego Climbing School is thrilled to partner with the San Diego Regional Center to provide custom adaptive, social and recreational outdoor rock climbing opportunities to SDRC clients at no cost to the participant.

SDRC serves and empower persons with developmental disabilities and their families to achieve their goals with community partners.

  • The following conditions must be met for a consumer to participate:

    Ages of clients served:

    • The program serves individuals ages 6 and up.

    • Youth, teens, and adults are welcome, with instruction tailored to developmental and physical abilities.

    Prerequisites for participation:

    • The consumer is a current SDRC client with IPP goals related to:

      • Physical coordination, health, or activity,

      • Social interaction or confidence-building,

      • Community integration or recreation access.

    The client must:

    • Be medically cleared for physical activity (as verified by a parent/guardian, care team, or health provider if needed),

    • Be willing and able to engage in a 1:2 instructional setting (with accommodations as needed),

    • Participate voluntarily and/or with appropriate support from a family member or aide when required.

    • An intake assessment and safety review must be completed before services begin.

  • A client may exit the program when any of the following conditions are met:

    • The client has achieved the relevant Individual Program Plan (IPP) goals that the program supports.

    • The client is ready to transition to a more independent or less intensive recreational setting.

    • The client’s needs have changed such that the climbing program can no longer support their IPP goals effectively.

    • The client requires services outside the scope of the climbing program (e.g., medical, behavioral, or supervision needs that exceed program capacity or safety standards).

    • The client or their legal guardian chooses to discontinue.

    • Safety or behavioral concerns arise that cannot be addressed through accommodations or support within the scope of SDCS’s stated ability.

    • Attendance or engagement significantly drops despite outreach and support efforts.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • All programs are led by professional guides who hold certifications from the American Mountain Guides Association, along with Wilderness First Responder and CPR certifications. They also have extensive experience working with youth in climbing programs.

  • No prior climbing experience is necessary! Our programs are designed to accommodate all skill levels. Whether a climber is a complete beginner or has been climbing for years, our professional guides will tailor the experience to their abilities and goals.

  • The climber must be age 6 or older for all programs with the San Diego Regional Center.

  • All programs include professional instruction from certified guides, all necessary climbing gear (harness, helmet, shoes, and chalk bag), and a structured curriculum covering both technical climbing skills and personal development activities. We also provide a supportive and fun learning environment in an outdoor setting.

  • SDCS provides a harness, helmet, shoes, chalk bag for all participants.

    If the climber wants to bring their own gear, they can! SDCS Guides will check all gear before it is utilized. We will provide a more detailed daily packing list (including items like sunscreen, backpack, etc.) upon registration. 

  • Climbers need to bring their own food, water, and personal items such as sunscreen and appropriate clothing. Transportation to and from the climbing site is also not included. A detailed packing list will be provided upon registration.


  • For all programs with the SDRC, the Guide to participant ratio will never exceed 1:2

  • Participants are responsible for bringing their own food. We recommend packing nutritious, high-energy meals and snacks that are easy to prepare and transport. Guides will ensure that there are snack and lunch breaks throughout the climbing day.

  • Risk management is our top priority. All SDCS guides are AMGA-certified and trained in Wilderness First Responder and CPR. We use industry-standard climbing equipment, follow best practices for risk management, and maintain a strict guide-to-climber ratio to ensure close supervision and instruction.
